| a note from George ... The coaching pages below contain approximately 160 articles and 400 plus pages of text and illustrations on a variety of subjects related to soccer coaching. There are articles on general coaching philosophy, what to expect from children at various ages, and how to organize a practice. There are exercises for teaching some of the basics like footskills, passing and receiving, shooting, the Keeper, and defending. There are more advanced exercises on passing patterns, transition play, speed of play and switching the field. These exercises have come from many diverse sources around the Island and around the country and around the world. Many came from ideas garnered from watching other coaches at the Long Island Junior Soccer Academy during "B" and "A" license courses. Others came from top Long Island coaches and trainers like Frank Schmidt of Sachem, Sue Ryan of Stony Brook, Mike Smolens of Kings Point, Ray Reid and Bobby Muus of UCONN, Bo Wernersbach of Farmingdale and Ron Alber USSF A coach from Commack. Coaches like Bruce Brownlee (TopHat Soccer in Atlanta), Jeff Pill (USSF A coach in NH) and Gary Rue, a high school coach in Frankfort KY, have also contributed. The articles and exercises are for all coaches who may either just be starting out or who may need a new idea to freshen up their practice sessions. Comments and new ideas are always welcome. |
